Getting behind the wheel after consuming too much alcohol can cause irreparable damage, not just to the one driver but to others on the road. Drunk driving has been the cause of a number of deaths on Georgia roads and all over the country. Police believe drunk driving was behind the death of a woman in an early morning crash.
The 54-year-old woman was on the road just after 3:30 a.m. for her job as a delivery person. She had worked delivering for the local newspaper in the past but had started working for another company. As she was driving her route, her small Dodge Neon was hit from behind by a much larger Chevrolet Avalanche. The car became stuck under the front bumper of the truck, and both vehicles went off the road and hit a tree.
The woman was killed instantly, but the driver of the truck, a 24-year-old male, said he was not hurt and did not want to be treated. He is facing charges of first-degree homicide by vehicle and DUI, with additional charges possible after the police conclude their investigation. It was believed the woman had plans to retire in the next few weeks.
The senseless act of drinking and driving will likely follow this young man the rest of his life. The lives of those who loved the victim will certainly be changed as they learn to live without her presence. Families in Georgia who have lost a loved one to drunk driving will want to contact an attorney as they make decisions on pursuing possible financial compensation.
